  The Desert View Watchtower stands at the rim of nearly two billion years of exposed Earth history, roughly half the age of the planet, readable in the rock walls below it. Mary Colter built it in 1932 in the tradition of the ancient Ancestral Puebloan towers that came before it. Humans have always built high to see farther.   A single pine tree growing out of solid lava rock at Sunset Crater, on a November afternoon when wildfire smoke was layering itself into the atmosphere and turning the light amber at its edges. The volcanic field erupted a thousand years ago. A wildfire took the recovered forest in 2022. This tree did not receive either message. The earth built its own watchtower long before we thought of the idea. There are no eagles in this frame. The sentinel is the land itself.
