Two birds. One branch. One calling, one listening.
The front eagle holds low, head dipped slightly, bill just barely parted, the posture of an animal that is present and attentive but still. Behind it, taller, the second bird rises above the first’s shoulders with its bill fully open, calling. The depth between them is only inches, but it reads as a relationship, one voice carrying outward, one receiving it, both fully committed to the exchange. You don’t get this close to two birds at once by accident. You get it by being still long enough that the accident stops being possible.
The background is all bare winter branches, the dense, interlocking dormant canopy of the Mississippi River corridor in February, dark and complex, slightly softened by the flat overcast sky. Against that background, the white heads of both birds hold with total clarity. Two points of light in a dark lattice. The open bill of the calling bird is visible above the quieter one in front, and that layering, voice over stillness, sound over presence, is what the image is.
When eagles call to one another at close range, you feel it before you process it. Something in the sound has weight. Your nervous system responds the way it responds to anything that carries real consequence. The birds are not performing. They are communicating something specific to each other, in a language that was old before we had language, and the fact that we cannot know exactly what is being said does not make the conversation less real.
February in Saint Paul. The river moves below the ice at its margins. The eagles are here because the water is open and the fish are in it, and they will follow the thaw line north come April, back to breeding grounds in the upper Midwest, Canada, Alaska. For these weeks, they are fully here. On this branch, in this conversation, nowhere else.

Artist Field Notes + Provenance
January, 2015. Mississippi River backwaters. I’d been watching this mated pair for three winters. That morning, one returned to the perch and began calling — a sound that carries over a mile of frozen river. The other answered from the nest tree. This moment lasted 8 seconds. Bald eagles were nearly extinct in the lower 48 by 1963, with just 417 nesting pairs left. Because of the Endangered Species Act and decades of habitat protection, we now have over 71,400 pairs. This image exists because people chose to act.
Location: Exact public GPS coordinates for individual active bald eagle nests are not publicly published by wildlife agencies. This policy protects the birds from human disturbance, drone activity, and potential harassment, especially during sensitive breeding and nesting seasons.
