There is a single pine tree in this image. It is growing out of solid lava rock.
That is the whole story, and it needs no embellishment.
Sunset Crater erupted approximately one thousand years ago, tearing open the earth and resurfacing everything within reach in a layer of cinders and basalt that nothing was supposed to grow through. The Tunnel Fire of April 2022 then burned more than sixty percent of the monument, taking what vegetation had reclaimed over those ten centuries and reducing it to ash and standing dead wood. Destruction compounding destruction. The land here has been told twice, in geological language, that it is finished.
This tree did not receive that message.
On November 5th, 2025, there was a wildfire burning in the vicinity. I could smell it before I could see the sky change, wood smoke carried on the afternoon air, dry and sharp, the specific smell of living forest burning somewhere out of sight. The haze had begun to settle into the atmosphere in the way that wildfire smoke does: dimensional, layered, softening the mid-ground, flattening the distance. The light through that smoke turns amber at the edges. The cooled lava field, already grey-blue and lunar in its texture, took on a quality in that light that I could not have manufactured. The smoke was doing the work of a century of painters who chased that exact atmospheric effect.
The green needles of that pine against the volcanic rock and the smoke-filtered sky, green being the color of something that refuses to accept the terms it has been given, is what held me there until I had the frame I wanted.
The title was never a question.
