This is the moment just before gone.
The eagle is already committed, wings fully extended, talons releasing the treetop, the whole body angled into the departure. There is no hesitation in this frame. Whatever decision was made, it was made before I could see it being made. That is the nature of working with apex predators. The decision and the action are the same thing.
The warm autumn canopy below, those golden-russet treetops, tells you something about the time of year and the elevation. The east side of Zion sits higher than the canyon proper, and by early January the cottonwoods and oaks along the washes have already turned and some have shed. What remains is color, compressed and dense, and against the flat pale grey of a late afternoon winter sky, it reads almost as a kind of fire.
At 5 p.m. in January you have minutes, not more. The light changes by the second at that hour. I had been in the area long enough to have stopped feeling like a visitor; you reach a point where discomfort becomes background noise and the only thing that exists is what is in front of you. I was paying attention to everything: the temperature dropping, the particular stillness of the Colorado Plateau in winter, the sounds that were and were not there. Birds communicate their awareness of one another. When something shifts in that system, you feel it before you can explain it.
This bird launched into the last light of the day. I had what I came for.
